Kitchen Cabinet Features That Make Them More Durable

If you're about to have new kitchen cabinets installed in your home, then you probably want those cabinets to last as long as possible. Choosing cabinets with the right features can really help you in this regard. So, what features are likely to make your cabinets last longer? Take a look.

Nickel or Brass Hardware

Worn-out and damaged cabinet hardware can make the whole cabinet look old and disheveled. So, when choosing your cabinet hardware, you want to focus on materials that are durable, long-lasting, and resistant to damage. Nickel hardware fits the bill. Brushed nickel has a less glossy look, whereas polished nickel is shiny. Brass hardware is also really durable, although it tends to look a bit more formal and traditional.

Waterproof Finish

There are many different finishes that cabinet makers can use. Paint is always an option, as are various stains and wax finishes. Regardless of which finish you choose, make sure it is waterproof. This way, if your cabinets are exposed to liquid for an extended period of time, they won't absorb water and warp. It's not unusual for a bottle of liquid to spill in an upper cabinet or for a pipe to leak into a lower cabinet. If you don't have a waterproof finish, then this can ruin the cabinets entirely.

Soft-Close Hinges

You often pay significantly more to have soft-close hinges put on your cabinets. However, these hinges do more than simply make your cabinets a pleasure to close. They grab the cabinet door and close it gently, rather than allowing it to bang against the cabinet box. This helps protect the cabinet box from damage, dents, and scrapes over the years. Spend a little more on soft-close hinges, and you'll likely get more good years out of your cabinetry.

Flat-Panel Doors

There are many styles of cabinet doors. Most, including Shaker-style and inset doors, are made with a few pieces of wood that are connected together. Flat-panel doors, however, are made from a single piece of wood. Flat-panel doors are often the more durable choice since you don't have to worry about the pieces of wood splitting apart as the doors age. Flat-panel doors do not have to be boring, either. There are lots of textured finishes that can give them character.

If you want your kitchen cabinets to last, talk to a kitchen cabinetry specialist about including the options above. They may also have some other suggestions for finishes, hardware, and materials that will last for years to come.
